Local MLA Congratulates Government on SaskPower Initiative

Swift Current MLA Brad Wall stood in the Legislature today and congratulated the government on its announcement earlier this week that it will allow the cities of Swift Current and Saskatoon the right to obtain their electrical power from sources other than SaskPower.

"Only Swift Current and Saskatoon had the foresight years ago to refuse to sell their electrical utilities to the provincial government. The only problem has been that these communities have been handcuffed by SaskPower's monopoly that would restrict these communities to purchasing bulk power from only the crown corporation." Wall said. "This has meant that the City of Swift Current could not even explore a better deal for its residents from other suppliers."

Wall said that the move by SaskPower was a very positive one that not only allowed the communities to consider bulk purchases from other sources, but would also allow them to investigate the potential of developing their own electrical generation capacity.

"During the election campaign and since I pledged myself to a new style of politics that would acknowledge the actions and proposals by my political opponents that were positive for our constituency. This step that the government has taken is certainly positive and forward-looking for Swift Current and Saskatoon and I was pleased to publicly congratulate the government in the Legislative Assembly for this initiative." Wall concluded.
